A Newcastle veteran of 10 years, Alan Shearer is not new to being the best in the league. Also, after retirement he would know who deserves the player of the year awards.
This year, Alan Shearer can’t help but pick a red for his choice of the best footballer in the league. His choice, obviously is Virgil Van-Dijk.
The 27 year old defender has played all 34 league games this season and might as well finish it with a 100% attendance record. Not just a good boy in class, the Dutchman knows how to stop the best.
Liverpool’s 20 goals conceded in the 34 so far is the best in the league defensive record. That is enough for Alan to choose him as his choice for player of the season:
“I am giving it to Van Dijk, on the basis he has transformed Liverpool defensively and given them the backbone they need to go the distance in the title race,”
“Defensively they have been so much more solid than they have been in recent seasons. In goal, Alisson has improved them too, but Van Dijk has been the big difference.
“He has just been a rock for them – a real man-mountain at the back with his organisation, presence and reading of the game.
“In games or situations where Liverpool have been under pressure, he has really stood out, because he has been so dominant – whatever the scenario, and whoever he is up against.”
