Signing a commanding centre half is on top of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s priority list.
Leicester City’s Harry Maguire is United’s first choice for the profile but they have seen two bids swiftly turned down by the foxes.
And with transfer window fast running out, the Red Devils could look elsewhere should the Maguire situation not be resolved soon.
United have now been linked with a move for Samuel Umtiti who is reportedly unhappy with a lack of playing time at the Camp Nou.
According to french outlet Le10Sport the Catalan giants are ready to entertain offers in the region of €60m (£54m) for the World Cup winner.
According to the same report, Barca have not yet seen an offer arrive for Umtiti.
Though United are still hot on Maguire’s trail they have also been linked with wantaway Spurs star Toby Alderweireld.
Ed Woodward has been told by the Glazers to raise funds by player sales before making a move for the likes of Harry Maguire and Samuel Umtiti.
It was this sell and buy policy of the Glazers over which Jose Mourinho grew disgruntled at Old Trafford.
Current United boss Solskjaer revealed that United will sign players in the summer but kept a tight lid on how many.
“Of course, we’ve been discussing how to move the club forward,” Solskjaer said.
“That doesn’t mean we’ve said x amount of money or x amount of players. We’ve sat down and discussed, but now it’s easier to be clear about what we need to do because we will do some business this summer.”
“Of course, the lure, if you want, of the Champions League is important. It might be important for some players but, to play for Man United, you know if you sign a contract for five years or four years, you’re going to be playing in the Champions League.”
