Garth Crooks is not known to mend his words. This week for BBC, when he had to choose his team of the week, he selected an all Merseyside defence.
His center backs included Van-Dijk and Joel Matip but also Seamus Coleman. In midfield he selected one more Liverpudlian, Georginio Wijnaldum.
However, Garth Crooks went on to state something not everyone can agree with but regardless he has his say:
“I don’t normally look beyond Virgil van Dijk in Liverpool’s back four when clean sheets have been maintained and matches won, but on this occasion I think I have to.
“Joel Matip was superb against Cardiff and overshadowed even the brilliant Van Dijk.
“Matip’s defending has been much more considered since the arrival of Van Dijk but it’s the quality of Matip’s distribution that has left me speechless.”

While some fans were raging against Matip in the first half, the team saw out a clean sheet. 1 times out of 10, it is certainly possible the Cameroon international will overshadow his Dutch teammate.
