Chelsea head coach Maurizio Sarri believes that his side is “in trouble” ahead of their Europa League semifinal owing to their defensive injury crisis.

Antonio Rudiger had to undergo a repair surgery on his damaged meniscus and is expected to sit out three months at least.

The Italian has been given a major headache after it was revealed that Gary Cahill is out with an injury to his Achilles heel.

Although interim skipper Cesar Azpilicueta can cover at Centre half, David Luiz and Andreas Christensen remain the only two fit specialist central defenders at Maurizio Sarri’s disposal.

“Gary Cahill has an Achilles tendon injury,” claimed Sarri.

“We hope to recover him in one week. So we are in trouble with the centre backs. For the last two trainings, we played with Azpilicueta at centre back. So we are in trouble.

“We’ve played 58 matches so injuries are typical. We were lucky previously but not in the last 10 days.”

Elucidating further on Rudiger’s injury, Sarri added:

“Rudiger is out for at least three months I think,

“He’s upset of course but is very strong and I’m sure he will come back stronger. We tried to arrive at the end of the season, but the injury was there. He had a problem with his meniscus, it was broken.

“We tried to arrive to the end of the season because sometimes you are able to play for one month (with the injury). But the situation was the same.”

“We’ve played 58 matches so injuries are typical. We were lucky previously but not in the last 10 days.”

The 60-year-old was given some respite when Cesar Azpilicueta stated that he was ready to step in as a central defender if need be

“I’m ready to play wherever the manager needs me to play,” said Azpilicueta.

“But I can adapt to different positions. So I’m ready for it.”
