David de Gea to sign a new 5-year contract at Manchester United: Reports

Manchester United star David de Gea is set to sign a new 5-year contract at the Old Trafford after the latest talks with the Man Utd board, as per the reports.

David de Gea has only one year left on his Manchester United contract and it was getting increasingly likely that the Spaniard would depart the Old Trafford on a free transfer next season, just like Ander Herrera did last month.

However, if the latest reports are to be believed, the 28-year-old has agreed on a new 5-year-deal at the Old Trafford that will see him earn £350k-a-week, after the negotiations with his agent Jorge Mendes went well.

So, why did it take this long for de Gea to agree on a new deal with the club?

Well, there are 2 reasons for that:

The Spaniard currently earns £200k-a-week wages at the Old Trafford, but he was refusing to extend the contract as the goalkeeper wanted parity with Alexis Sanchez’s £500k-a-week wages.

As per de Gea’s entourage, the goalkeeper is the most important member of the Man Utd team after winning various player of the year award at the club and that’s why he deserves to be paid like that.

Of course, Ed Woodward was unwilling to make the same mistake and put him on a similar deal as the Chilean. We all know how that went, hence these haggles along the way.

The other ‘reported’ reason for de Gea to take so long to decide his future was the fact that the 28-year-old was waiting for Real Madrid to make their move, which they didn’t, as Zidane had more pressing targets to take care of.

There was always the option to join PSG but Manchester United have ‘reportedly’ matched whatever PSG were offering to pay the goalkeeper to secure his stay at the Old Trafford for another 5 years.

Oh and this new deal for David de Gea would also make him the highest paid goalkeeper in the world! Here’s how Manchester United fans are reacting to the news.
