While speaking with Sky Sports’ Weekend Preview podcast, Jamie Carragher revealed his surprise regarding the fact that Liverpool did not make a move to sign Hakim Ziyech from Ajax before Chelsea confirmed his signing.
Ziyech has starred for Ajax since joining the Dutch club in the summer of 2016. In just over three and a half years, the 32-time Morocco international has scored 48 goals in 160 games from out wide, as well as laying on an enormous 82 assists.
Liverpool legend Carragher described Ziyech as “outstanding” in last season’s stunning Champions League campaign that saw Ajax reach the semi-finals of the competition – and claims he is surprised Liverpool did not go after the African ace.
He [Ziyech] was outstanding last season in Ajax’s Champions League run. I thought he was a player Liverpool could look at, as cover for Mane or Salah. But it looks as though Frank Lampard has got his business done early,” Carragher said.
For a bargain price of less than £40million, Ziyech could have been a value for money and a top, top signing for Liverpool.
