Manchester United star Juan Mata is set to sign a new 3-year contract at Manchester United that will keep him at the Club until 2022.

We have been covering the latest reports about Juan Mata’s contract situation for the past few weeks which you can read here and here.

With his contract set to run down in the next 2 weeks, it was high time a decision was made about his future and it seems like it has been made, as per the reliable Guardian.

So, what was the problem with Juan Mata’s contract?

Currently on £140,000-a-week wages, Mata’s contract runs down at the end of the June of this month.

Manchester United were willing to offer him a year extension on the similar wages, while the Spaniard wanted a significant pay-rise on his wages to commit his future at the Old Trafford.

Obviously, this situation has been dragging on for the past few months. But, after weeks of speculations and negotiations, it seems like both the parties have come to a truce.

New contract

Juan Mata’s reported new contract will still see him earn the similar wages of £140,000-a-week. But, instead of a one-year extension, the 31-year-old is set to be offered a new 3-year-deal by Ed Woodward which has reportedly convinced him to agree on the deal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s influence

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is said to be a big fan of Juan Mata and he had reportedly asked Ed Woodward to offer him an extension that keeps him at the Old Trafford.

Of course, at 31-years of age, Mata won’t be a starter anymore. If anything, he could play the role of an impact sub, while helping the up and coming youngsters with his experience and the Spaniard seems to be happy playing that role.

After scoring 47 goals and providing 39 assists in 238 games at the club, it seems like Mata’s adventure in the Red will continue for at least another 3 years.
