Now 28, and in his prime, this is probably the last chance for the Napoli center-back to earn one big, last contract of his playing career with both the clubs from Manchester interested in his services.
However, when asked about his future during an interview, Koulibaly revealed that he’s only focusing on the African Cup Of Nations tournament with Senegal instead of wondering about his future:
“I don’t know [if I’ll still be at Napoli next year], I think so,” he told Goal in the aftermath of his national team’s 2-0 win over Tanzania in the Africa Cup of Nations, “but I have to play the Afcon and then after that I’ll go back to Napoli.”
“Everyone’s speaking about me, but I’m only speaking about Senegal, because that’s my objective today and I want to achieve something big with Senegal.”
“I’m relaxed, I want to focus on the Afcon and after that return to Napoli and we’ll see what happens.
That’s a standard answer you expect from a professional player. While Koulibaly keeps his options open by claiming that ‘he doesn’t know’ about his future, the 28-year-old isn’t disrespectful about Napoli where he’s still under a contract!
Meanwhile, we have entered the last week of June and Manchester United are still nowhere close to sorting out their defense.
A center-back signing has been the priority for a very long time as the links with Harry Maguire and Koulibaly persists. Hopefully, we get one of the deals done, at least, before the end of July…
