Joe Gomez has been out injured for the better part of the season. He is set to make a reappearance into the matchday squad and hopefully the first XI.
However, Klopp has since planted Matip as Van-Dijk’s partner. The Cameroon international has formed a formidable partnership that has kept Liverpool clean at the back.
Joe Gomez returns from injury at such a moment in the season that ‘changing what works…’ might be an adage to pay heed to.
“Absolutely [he looks strong]. Ox and Joe both did really well at Leicester, it was a brilliant game by all of the boys, to be honest, I watched it back. It looked really good.
“It’s clear they still need time to get full match fitness but it’s nice to have them back and now Joe first as an option. He played right full-back, we need him as this option as well.
“We all know he played a wonderful season at the centre-half position until his injury, but he can play both and it’s good to have him.”

In so far as Klopp’s willingness to play him is concerned, Joe Gomez is on the travelling squad to Porto. The Champions League is not such a bad place to return from injury.
