Liverpool has opted not to go for a big-money deal for the Ajax defender as they were not assured that Matthijs de Ligt would be given a start in their defence.
De Ligt will be leaving Amsterdam this summer with a host of Europe’s biggest clubs interested in him.
According to the Evening Standard, Liverpool had shown interest in the teenager last summer, but that position has changed considerably.
Klopp also had the idea that De Ligt will be asking for a fee at least £60million and the Reds were only prepared to spend big for players who could make their place in the playing eleven, like Alisson and Virgil van Dijk.
Therefore, De Ligt may have to fight for his place in the Liverpool defence, and the club was also worried about their huge spending, as he would have been their third most expensive signing.
However, Klopp is still interested in investing in defensive reinforcements this summer if they can sign him for a correct amount.
The German coach is looking for a player who is capable of providing flexible defensive cover.
This could be shocking news for the Anfield fans who were expecting De ligt in England this summer.
