Usually, Liverpool and most other clubs play their last league game in the shirt for next season. This helps the kit-maker put the designs front and center with the fans. Building up purchase in anticipation of the new season.
In the Madrid final, Liverpool will still play in the record-breaking 2018-19 kits by New Balance. The Boston based manufacturer unveiled a new kit for the upcoming season a few weeks ago. Inspired by the triumphant kits of the 80s, the new kits have already been donned by players for promotional material.
In Madrid, Liverpool will be bound to wear the shirts they have been wearing all season. The pinstriped shirt for next season can’t be used because of UEFA rules governing the participants’ kits. Like players, the design of kits to be worn is also provided by the club to UEFA beforehand. Only a change of primary sponsor can allow for changing kits midway in an individual campaign.
Hence, it is not possible for Liverpool to showcase their new kits in the biggest match of the season in Madrid. Fans will have to wait for the next season to see players in the new kits. They are available to order though.
Before this, Liverpool broke back to back records for sale of kits. This season Liverpool have sold more kits than at any time in their history, breaking the record set only one season ago. The New Balance deal expires at the end of next season and speculation is rife thatNike (or adidas) may be coming onboard in a record-breaking deal.
