Reports claim that United are clear favourites now to sign Fernandes since City have decided against signing the Portuguese.
City manager Pep Guardiola wants the club to invest all their transfer efforts in landing Atletico Madrid star Rodri who he touts as a replacement for Fernandinho.
Fernandinho, who turned 34 this month is a vital cog in Guardiola’s scheme of things, and the Cityzens have been looking to replace the ageing star for some time now.
The Cityzens failed in their pursuit of both of their primary targets, firstly Fred to Manchester United and then Jorginho to Chelsea but they now feel that Rodri is the man who could take over from Fernandinho at the Etihad.
So/ to smoothly facilitate their move for Rodri, Pep Guardiola’s side is taking a step back in their pursuit of Fernandes.
The 24-year-old does have an £86m release clause in his contract, but Sporting are ready to entertain offers in the range of £50m to eventually trigger a bidding war.
The Portuguese is currently tied to a contract that keeps him at the José Alvalade Stadium till 2023.
Man United and Solksjaer are planning a major overhaul at the club which could see the departure of some of their star names and as many as five big names could arrive at the Old Trafford. (ESPN Sources).
