Manchester United are in a desperate need of a Centre back in the summer transfer window if we want to challenge for the trophies next season.
Victor Lindelof is the only Central defender who is good enough to start for the Red Devils. Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, while loyal servants are not good enough to make the starting eleven every week and at the very best, are good squad players.
Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly are seldom fit and thus cannot be relied upon for the whole season while Matteo Darmian’s time has been up for the past couple of seasons.
Now according to the latest reports, Manchester United were ready to strike a deal with Ajax for Matthijs De Ligt worth £65million (£250,000-a-week, five-year deal).
Matthijs De Ligt is probably the most in-demand player in world football right now and at 19 years of age has every big club vying for his signature, including Manchester United.
However, if reports are to be believed, the Dutch superstar has rejected Manchester United’s approach saying that he does not want a move to the Old Trafford.
The reason rumoured behind the rejection is the fact that we won’t be playing in the Champions League next season and De Ligt, who would be starting for Ajax in the Champions League semi-final against Tottenham tonight, would prefer a move to a Champions League club.
Finishing outside top 4 has its consequences and one of them is the fact that the top players would be sceptical to sign for us. Hopefully, we can get back into Europe’s premier competition as soon as possible.
