While the chants at Old Trafford have been comparatively silent in the past few years, due to the fading of the glory that was carried in the atmosphere, it does not erase the fact that Manchester United remains one of the best supported and most loved club in the world.
It is only natural that a club of this magnitude has various songs and chants dedicated to the team and certain players. While some have been sung on specific occasions only, others have been persistent for decades.
We take a look at the best 5 of these chants:
5. Giggs Will Tear You Apart
“Giggs… Giggs will tear you apart… (again)
Giggs… Giggs will tear you apart… (again)”
Sung to the tune of Joy Division’s classic, “Love will tear you apart”, the chant was sung in honour of academy graduate and Old Trafford icon, Ryan Giggs. The chant aimed at warning opponents of the threat that the speedy winger posed in his days. This chant beat the likes of “Ooh Aah Cantona” and “He Came From Uruguay” sung respectively for United’s legends, Eric Cantona and Diego Forlan whilst they were at the club to be my no. 5 spot.
4. “United Road”
“Take me home, United Road
To the place I belong
To Old Trafford
To see United”
Though some find the bouncy tune of the chant annoying, the chant was one of the most popular ever heard at Old Trafford. Sung to the tune of John Denver’s “Country Roads”, the chant is a celebration of United’s faithful supporters over the years while also referencing the home ground which was a nightmarish fortress for the opponents then.
3. “Ferguson’s Red and White Army”
The chant was in recognition of the legendary team built by iconic manager, Sir Alex Ferguson during his 36 years regime at the club. The chant was usually sung at the end of the match. Ferguson’s team conquered England, winning 13 Premier League titles, 4 League Cups and 5 FA Cups. They also won two Champions League titles, 1 UEFA Super Cup and 1 Club World Cup.
2. “Red Flag Flying High”
“United’s flag is deepest red
It shrouded all our Munich’s dead
Before their limbs grew stiff and cold
Their heart’s blood dyed its every fold
Then raise United’s banner high
Beneath its shade, we’ll live and die
So keep the faith and never fear”
“We’ll keep the red flag flying high
We’ll never die, we’ll never die….”
It is the most emotional chant of all Manchester United chants there is. It was first sung in 1958 to commemorate the tragic death of the six United’s players that perished in the plane crash in Munich. The chant is sung every February at Old Trafford in memory of the dead who were never forgotten by the Old Trafford faithfuls.
1. “Glory Glory Man United”
“Glory glory Man United
Glory glory Man United
Glory glory Man United
As the Reds go marching on on on”
The chant was sung to the tune of “Glory Glory Hallelujah”. It is undoubtedly the most popular Manchester United chant. The single was released at the end of the FA Cup final against Brighton and Hove Albion in 1983. Despite the fact that the club has seen even more glorious days since then, fans stuck to the chant and it is still sung at Old Trafford till date.
