Manchester United re-offered the chance to sign Matthijs De Ligt

Manchester United have been re-offered the chance to sign Matthijs De Ligt by his agent Mino Raiola according to football expert Ian McGarry.

De Ligt has caught the eye of some of the biggest names in football after playing a key role Ajax’s domestic double triumph and the team’s run to Champions League semi-finals.

The teenager is one of the hottest properties in the transfer market with Juventus, Barcelona and Manchester United all battling it out to secure his services.

However, McGarry claims Raiola’s £9m demand in commission is a major stumbling block in conversations.

“Manchester United have certainly shown a great interest in [De Ligt] but are understandably cynical about the fact Mino Raiola is his agent and Raiola has caused them problems already with Paul Pogba throughout his time at Old Trafford,” he said on The Transfer Window podcast.

“I was told last weekend that Raiola had again come back to Ed Woodward to offer De Ligt and that the problems in terms of De Ligt actually securing a move out of Ajax is not the fee that Ajax were asking, which is similar to the €75m [£67m] they secured from Frenkie de Jong at Barcelona, but of course Mino’s commission – which is coming in at around €10.5m [£9m] net.

“Usually a commission on any transfer deal for an agent is between six and 7.5 per cent. 10 per cent usually is the maximum a club will pay, but with Raiola he always asks for more as he did with Pogba.

“I think that’s been the problem, because so far Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester United have shown a willingness to at least pay the fee to Ajax, but not the commission to Raiola.”

McGarry further went to emphasise that De Ligt’s host of suitors might be convening amongst themselves to express their mutual disdain for Raiola.

“I think what’s very intriguing about De Ligt is he’s been available, everyone’s known he’s been available in European football for the last four to five months.

“Everyone saw his performances in taking Ajax to the Eredivisie championship and probably more importantly to the Champions League semi-finals.

“I just wonder if clubs like Manchester United, Juventus, PSG, who have all been linked with the player, even Barcelona as well I should say, they talk to each other on a kind of weekly basis about this and that and players who are coming and going and everything else.

“Everyone at each club has got a contact who is high up, so they can send a WhatsApp message or an email or just make a casual call and say, ‘do you know what? This guy Raiola is taking the mickey out of all of us. We should all just decide to not pay the commission on De Ligt, otherwise every time one of his clients move, we’re all gonna be held to ransom.’

“It is effectively, not against the rules, but against tradition in terms of what agents are expected and require in terms of their payment.

“It’s happened in exceptional circumstances in some transfers, Paul Pogba being the most recent and probably the most expensive.

“I would like to think that in this case, the clubs – and I do believe that this is the case – are basically reneging on buying De Ligt.

“Not because of the transfer fee, but because of the commission being asked for by his agent, which extends that financial commitment beyond where it should be.”
