Manchester United are leading the race to sign former Spurs striker Fernando Llorente, as per the latest reports in the English media.

Llorente’s contract at Spurs expired at the end of the last season and the Spaniard is now a free agent.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku’s future is still in doubt with the latest reports from Metro providing an update on the situation of the Belgian:

“The Belgian has been training with former club Anderlecht for the last two days and has made no secret of the fact he wants to move to Italy during this transfer window.”

It seems like Romelu Lukaku’s time at Manchester United is all but done as the 25-year-old has made up his mind to leave the Old Trafford before the end of the transfer window.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already elevated Marcus Rashford as the first choice no. 9 in the squad, and now, with the exit of Romelu Lukaku, the gaffer is looking to sign a striker with a unique character who can complement Rashford in the team.

As we reported earlier, Manchester United were interested in the transfer of Mario Mandzukic from Juventus, but the failure of Paulo Dybala-Romelu Lukaku swap deal meant that the transfer for the Croatian fell through at the last minute.

Now, with former Spurs Striker Fernando Llorente available on a free, the Spaniard is being viewed in the same mold as Mandzukic; Tall, strong, capable of converting headers from crosses, very good hold-up play that brings in the attacking players from the wide.

As per the reports, Llorente is being viewed as a Plan B against defenses that are too deep and compact to penetrate, something that got us interested in Mario Mandzukic in the first place.

Of course, Marcus Rashford will still be the first choice (we might also Martial starting in that position too), but having a Plan B against deep defenses isn’t a bad idea, is it?
