Man United have been urged to end Harry Maguire’s transfer pursuit by Paul Mariner who believes the 26-year-old is just not ‘Good Enough’.
According to Sky Sports, Leicester City have turned down United’s second worth a whopping £70m for the Englishman as they look to be standing firm on their £90m valuation of the player making him the most expensive defender of all time.
Maguire has overseen a meteoric rise in future in recent seasons, from being relegated with Hull City back in 2016 to becoming one of the stars of England’s successful world cup campaign.
The Red Devils were on the verge of signing Maguire previous season but the deal fell through at the last moment after United refused to pay £65m for him.
The Red Devils have come back strong for Maguire as they look to strengthen their shaky looking defence but ex-Arsenal striker Paul Mariner has urged United to end their pursuit of Maguire as he’s not the elite defender to sort their defensive woes.
“Is he worth that money? Of course he’s not,” Mariner told ESPN FC
“But the market’s crazy.
“We speak about Van Dijk when Van Dijk went to Liverpool, was he worth that?
“Well it proves that he is worth it because they won the Champions League and that’s a massive plus for them.
“But is anybody worth this type of money? We’re talking about defensive players.
“So let’s go through his skill set. Is he a good one on one defender? Not bad.
“Can he get turned? Yes. Is he quick? No.
“He brings the ball out from the back, yes, very good. Positionally what’s he like? He’s decent in both boxes.
“That’s not £70m for me though.
“That’s when you start talking about elite central defenders in the world.”
