Manchester United star, Mason Greenwood, was absent from Red Devils’ U-21 squad that took on Rotherham last night, as per the reports.
Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has vowed to provide opportunities to the academy youngsters who deserve a shot at the first eleven, with Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomes impressing in the pre-season.
However, the 17-year-old Mason Greenwood has been especially impressive for the Red Devils with a few brilliant performances in the preseason games which raised the question of whether he should start against Chelsea in the Premier League opener.
Solskjaer has already hinted about the possibility of Greenwood featuring against Chelsea:
“Mason has a chance to start against Chelsea [on Sunday, 11 August], definitely. He is more than capable,” said Solskjaer.
“It is a good possibility if he keeps going as he does. It is difficult to keep players out who perform well.
“[I was] delighted with the goal he scored. That first goal is a weight off his shoulders.
“With his movement, cleverness, he’s going to be a very good player. He’s a natural footballer who can play anywhere along the front line.”
And now, if the latest reports are to believed, Manchester United star Angel Gomes and Tahith Chong featured for United’s U-21 game against Rotherham last night:
#MUAcademy: Rotherham v #MUFC (A), @LeasingComTrphy – Kovar; Laird, Bernard, O’Connor, Williams; Garner, Levitt; Ramazani, Gomes (c), Chong; Mellor. Subs: Fojticek, Ercolani, Tanner, Galbraith, McGhee, Puigmal, Traore.

As you can see, Mason Greenwood was absent from this lineup which begs the question of whether the youngster has been training with the first-team squad and is set to feature against Chelsea…
The 17-year-old is a brilliantly talented individual who has the ability to play anywhere in that attacking role.
While some fans are already calling for him to start ahead of Jesse Lingard next season, there’s a chance we will see Greenwood featuring on the bench against Chelsea on Sunday and then come on as the situation demands and desires.
