Manchester United are in a desperate need of a center-back. And a right-back. And a central-midfielder. And a Striker (if Lukaku leaves). And another central midfielder (if Pogba leaves). And a Goalkeeper (if de Gea leaves).

But most of all, Manchester United are in a need of a center-back (and a right back too). So, of course, when it was revealed that Mats Hummels was looking to make an exit from Bayern Munich, Manchester United showed their interest.

But in another embarrassing turn of events, we got rejected for Borussia Dortmund, even though we offered considerably more money (and other financial benefits). We got rejected for Borussia effing Dortmund!

So far, we have only managed to sign an relatively unproven player in Daniel James, despite the links to Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Kalidou Koulibaly, Bruno Fernandes etc.

In May, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer claimed that big players all over the Europe were still looking to sign for the Red Devils despite the absence of Champions League football:

“In the long-term planning, we have to think about [the Champions League]. We might be in the Champions League next year, we might not be and you’d be surprised how many agents have been touting their players.

“Not touting, that’s not the best word, is it? Telling us their players, their clients would love to be a part of Man United in the future. And that’s just the lure of Man United, they know, the potential and size of the club, they know in the end that we will get back to the good days.

“But players still want to come to Man United and you wouldn’t be surprised by the names that you get asked.”

Certainly Mats Hummels isn’t one of those names mentioned by Ole!

There’s still a lot of time left in this summer transfer window, but if everything continues in the similar way, Ed Woodward and co. will have a few big questions to answer.
