Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hints at new contract for David de Gea

David de Gea is on the verge of signing a new 5-year contract with Manchester United, according to the manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Spaniard has been stalling on a new contract for quite sometime as he enters the final year of his current contract at the Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old has been asking for a massive pay-rise on par with Alexis Sanchez’s salary, while Man United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward has been refusing to offer that kind of money to the Goalkeeper.

However, if the latest reports are to be believed, David de Gea is very close to putting pen to the paper on a new 5-year-deal worth in excess of £350k-a-week.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was inquired about the situation regarding de Gea’s contract during his press conference in Australia and here’s what he said:

“Hopefully we can agree with David as I’ve said a few times,” Solskjaer told a news conference at the WACA cricket ground on Tuesday.

“That’ll be up to David and the club to announce when that happens, if and when.”

A couple of months ago it looked like the Spaniard was set to join PSG in the summer, but the new contract talks between the club and the player’s entourage have been very positive and it seems like de Gea will be here for at least a few more years.

Manchester United, meanwhile, take on Leeds United at the Optus Stadium on Wednesday after cruising to a 2-0 victory over Perth Glory and there were some concerns regarding the fitness of Luke Shaw who hobbled off in the last game.

However, as per Solskjaer, Luke Shaw is alright and apart from Lee Grant, everyone should be available for the Leeds United friendly:

“We were all training [on Monday], no one missed training — 24 players plus keepers,” said Solskjaer.

“Lee Grant is still not fit and maybe we won’t risk Luke. Rom is fit. Luke trained on Monday but we might not risk him.”

With Shaw’s injury record, it’s better for him to sit the next one out and slowly build his fitness for the upcoming season.
