Diogo Dalot’s life at Manchester United hasn’t been a fairy tale it was supposed to be at all.
Jose Mourinho signed the promising youngster during his final year at Manchester United, however, he hasn’t been able to build upon his initial successes at the club because of the string of injuries.
Despite player’s agent being hopeful in the Summer that the player would be one of the breakout successes this season, Dalot has only made three appearances in all competitions for Manchester United.
He couldn’t feature often during the start of the campaign because of a hip injury and soon after that, he suffered a groin injury which kept him out of the Man Utd side since defeat by Newcastle on October 6.
Good news is that Dalot is finally fit and is raring to go. As he nears his return from injury, Dalot is hungry to get some games under his belt as he looks to make his way back into the first-team squad.
Things have changed a bit while he was absent though. New summer signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka has solidified his grip on the right-back role, while academy star Ethan Laird has shown glimpses of promise at both senior and youth levels.
All is not lost for Diogo Dalot at Manchester United though. In games where United would need extra attacking potency, Dalot might offer more direct threat from the bench, as well as improved crossing capabilities as a right-winger.
There is also a fair argument to suggest Dalot is better suited to Wan-Bissaka as a wing-back given his overlapping tendencies and desire to perpetually push forward when in possession of the ball. Either way, the Portuguese certainly has a valuable role to play at Old Trafford.
