Pundit: Klopp taking the squad to Dubai cost Liverpool the title

Former Ireland international and current pundit Tony Cascarino thinks that Klopp made one mistake that has killed any chance Liverpool had of winning the title.

It isn’t a player not being played or a match tactic, or even a horrible substitution. Klopp hasn’t put a foot wrong. If Liverpool don’t win the title after getting to 97 points, it is going to be the first time a team with so many points ends up second best.

Liverpool could have avoided this prolonged title battle according to Cascarino

Cascarino has blamed the trip to Dubai as the turning point in Liverpool’s title quest. The said trip happened way back in January. If you recall, the Reds were top of the league until Christmas. The Dubai trip of the squad was followed by two consecutive draws, giving City the chance to claw back from a position of loss.

“But for me it was the two draws in the space of a week against Leicester City and West Ham United three months ago.

“Those matches came on the back of the club’s mid-season training camp in Dubai and in both games Liverpool took an early lead but they looked so flat.

“They lost their momentum and dropped four crucial points. If they had won those games they could have gone into the final game needing only a draw to be champions.”

It is hard to pin-point this season’s result to one event. Cascarino also believes most people who see Liverpool loss to City as the turning point would be wrong. His reasoning likely is that in Leicester and West Ham (after the trip to Dubai) Liverpool lost points they had a strong probability of winning.

In his opinion it is a matter of losing concentration right in the middle of an important battle. It would indeed cost a lot of fans their hope of winning the league this season. But one thing is for sure, Liverpool fans can hold their head high thanks to the player’s efforts.

As of now, Liverpool are 2 points clear of Manchester City who are playing Leicester at home. Anything could happen, keep your fingers crossed.
