Rio Ferdinand discusses Manchester United return

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has admitted that he would be tempted to take on a ‘technical director’ job at the Old Trafford but there are a few considerations still.

Ed Woodward has been in talks with various Manchester United legends for the ‘technical director’ role in the past few months.

We have covered the whole Darren Fletcher angle and also about the rumours of Rio Ferdinand making a comeback at the Old Trafford.

The Red Devils fans have been frustrated over the transfer strategy at the Club. There doesn’t seem to be any kind of planning, strategy or coherence in the transfer market.

The ideology that we had under Sir Alex is lost and Rio has admitted that we need a new philosophy, an ideology and lots of patience to build back the Manchester United brand:

“Manchester United are looking for their ideology still.

“They went away from it after Sir Alex Ferguson, they tried to take it on under different managers and it didn’t work so they are still searching.

“They need to lock down a philosophy, an ideology, but it’s not just the first team. It needs to be across the club, with younger players and the foundations, all the way through.

Rio also gives the example of Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp and Manchester City under Pep Guardiola as to what we must be aiming for in the near future:

“There needs to be some sort of story at a football club for the stars and the staff to believe in. Liverpool have got that – [Jürgen] Klopp has created that. City have got that – Pep [Guardiola] has created that. But they have been allowed to create it. They have had time.”

On the question of whether he would be interested in a return to Manchester United in some kind of role, Ferdinand said:

“It all depends on the shape of the job. I don’t think it’s all been outlined at United in terms of the job description. I think there’s a lot to talk about within that.

“In that kind of role – the responsibility that comes with that – you can’t lie and say that that’s not a turn-on. Because you are helping to shape the fortunes of a club of that stature. That’s a huge job.

“So listen, all the boxes would have to be ticked that you’ve got in in your head before considering something like that.

“A lot of it is about yourself as well. You’re putting yourself out there. So to say that an opportunity like that comes around and you don’t take it. It wouldn’t be an easy call to make that decision.”

There has been a lot of talk over everything going around at the club and we think, bringing back past legends like Rio Ferdinand, Darren Fletcher or Edwin van der Saar can only help improve the philosophy at the club.

Not to mention, their experience in the game, the fact that they know the club inside out and the respect that they demand from the players for what they have achieved in their careers, it would be a wise decision to bring back a few of them, right?
