Liverpool star Sadio Mane has admitted that he was very close to joining Manchester United before his eventual move from Southampton to Liverpool.
The Senegalese Star joined the Klopp’s side in 2016 for a transfer fee of £34 million on a five-year contract.
However, things could have turned very differently if the 27-year-old is to be believed in his latest interview.
Talking about his transfer, Mane admits that he held talks with Manchester United’s then manager Louis Van Gaal and he could’ve turned up for us instead of Liverpool:
‘Yes, I was really, really close because I even met up with them.
“So I was coming, I was there and I spoke with the boss who was there before (Van Gaal),’ Mane said.
’They made an offer, but in the same week, Klopp called me.
‘He said: “I think it’s the right club. The right coach for me, and I think it’s better that I go to Liverpool’.
‘For me I think it was the right time as well.
‘I said, “I am going to Liverpool.”’
We can only imagine what our team would be like if we had managed to snap up the services of Sadio Mane in 2016!
The Liverpool star is one of the best players on the Right Wing in the Premier League while Manchester United have struggled to nail down a player for that exact spot.
The likes of Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard, even Marcus Rashford, Alexis Sanchez and Anthony Martial have all tried to make that position their own at some point of time, but none of them have succeeded in doing so.
Missing out on Sadio Mane, while we spend astronomical money on the likes of Alexis Sanchez, is just one of the reasons why we need a sporting director at the Old Trafford.
