Shearer: Kane, Alli and Eriksen are the reason Tottenham failed in final

Spurs had never been to a Champions League final before their match against Liverpool in Madrid. Tottenham failed to score in the biggest game of their history but there’s a feeling around the club of a new era, where European finals are not just a dream.

In the match between Tottenham and Liverpool, Tottennham came out second best. However, the result wasn’t that much of a surprise given that Liverpool were the better team, man for man. What actually hurt Tottenham was their star players who sort of didn’t show up (remember the first half?).

Alan Shearer names Kane, Alli and Christian Eriksen as the main reason Tottenham failed

The three star players who let the team down were captain Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen. This is not an assumption that we are throwing around. In fact, legendary striker Alan Shearer has named these three spurs players. Shearer called out the trio as the main reason of Spurs’ failure.

We must admit that the players and the manager were all a bit handicapped by the club’s retracted transfer approach in the last couple of windows. Still, these are top quality players who have been proving their mettle in the league for quiet some time now. The fans count on them to make a difference when it matters the most. But they failed to do so.

“They basically carried on their league form, scraping into the top four after a poor finish.”

Kane, as a matter of fact was chosen ahead of semi-final’s hero Lucas Moura. Mauricio Pochettino would have found hard to see any resultant improvement in the team’s performance.

Now, Tottenham should approach the transfer window with a sense of purpose. Otherwise, Spurs don’t only risk losing the trophies to competition but also the players and the manager. If Pochettino is still at the club, Tottenham’s Champions League dream can take a clue from Liverpool and we go again next season!
