Danny Mills, on pundit duty with Sky claims to have an understanding of the ongoing situation with Christian Eriksen. Eriksen, to the annoyance of Daniel Levy had claimed that he is looking for new challenge while on international duty with Denmark.
Danny Mills thinks the Danish playmaker has appeared for the last in a Spurs shirt when he played the Champions League final. Spurs lost the final 2-0 and in fact, Eriksen was one of the players blamed for the sorry performance. However, the issues run deeper than Eriksen at Spurs- a protracted transfer policy for the past two seasons has handicapped Mauricio Pochettino.
Sky’s Danny Mills thinks a lack of trophies makes Eriksen’s stay impossible
Mills, reported by Football Insider had this to say about Christian Eriksen’s situation at Spurs:
“As a player, you can get a little bit stale when you’ve been at one club a long time,”
“You need a fresh challenge, and that’s probably the case with Eriksen.”
– Danny Mills
Mills is spot on with the statement that players sometimes stagnate at a club, no matter how good they can be. If there’s not enough motivation to play for the shirt, you ought to change it. In Eriksen’s case, he’s perhaps also influenced by the ambition (or a lack therof) shown by Spurs in the past couple of seasons where they went close to winning the league before losing it for Leicester. Now, they have reached the Champions League final and perhaps with timely reinforcements could have lifted the trophy at the expense of Liverpool.
Eriksen’s contract expires in 2020 but rest assured that Daniel Levy will squeeze the last pound out of his contract if anyone wishes to buy him this summer. At the same time, Levy needs to be careful because Spurs may lose Eriksen for free in the prime of his career if he can’t make his move this summer. Eriksen has been at Spurs since 2013.
