Sporting Lisbon’s vice-president Francisco Salgado Zenha has shed some light on the negotiations related to the deal that saw Bruno Fernandes join Manchester United during the January transfer window.
While speaking to the Portuguese outlet Record, he said:
I realised in the negotiations that Manchester United were convinced that we were going to give in and that for 50million euros we would do the deal. Well, they ended up paying 65million.
“I have no doubts. But they were wrong. And they ended up paying what we wanted. We got 20million more than if we had sold four months ago.”
Manchester United finally paid £45.56million for Fernandes but the transfer fee could rise considerably thanks to the add-ons.
Fernandes’ move was eventually announced on January 30, less than 48 hours before the winter transfer window closed.
Fernandes made his United debut in the 0-0 draw with Wolves prior to the winter break.
