Tottenham are in a frenzy to gazump and hijack moves for players that rival club Arsenal have vetted so far this summer. Joachim Andersen was reportedly moving to Arsenal as Spurs went in to spoil the gunners party. Now the tabloids would have us believe that they are going to do it once again, this time for Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba.
Who is Arsenal and Tottenham target William Saliba
Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne have been producing some great youngsters that big clubs have snapped up in recent years. It is believed the latest from the prodigious talent conveyor belt is William Saliba. The central defender played 16 French league games last season after being promoted from their U-19 side only last summer.
This impressive breakthrough season prompted Arsenal to try and get him on the cheap while clubs like Tottenham vied for the signature of bigger names. A contract that keeps him with a French side until 2023 was signed in April 2018 ensuring any suitors will pay the price Saint-Etienne demanded for their youngster.
Why Arsenal failed where Spurs maybe successful
Unai Emery’s Arsenal are desperately in search of central defenders. It is still unclear how gunners would cope with the Premier League by buying Under-20 players like William Saliba but earlier reports had also linked them with Joachim Andersen who is a more polished product than Saliba. His £31 million price proved prohibitive for Gunners and now they have turned their sights on William Saliba.
It has been reported that the player had agreed a move in principle as well as the salary Arsenal will pay. All that remained was agreeing a fee with his club. Which Arsenal obviously couldn’t while Spurs are ready to splash the cash needed to get the players they want this summer.
It’s still very early to say if there’s any truth in these stories.
