Jaap Stam insists Liverpool should attempt to sign Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt to partner Virgil van Dijk.
The Ajax defender has earned applauds for his incredible performance in the Champions League this season as the Dutch club managed to upset the most prominent teams to reach the semi-finals.
De Ligt played a key role for the Ajax team that secured famous victories over the clubs like Juventus and Real Madrid.
However, Ajax lost 3-2 to Tottenham in the second leg of their Champions League semi-finals and missing out on a place in the showpiece against Liverpool.
De Ligt is already Van Dijk’s centre-half partner in the national side following his overwhelming performances at the club level.
The 19-year-old defender has been linked with a host of top European clubs following his skills in this Champions League campaign.
And former Manchester United defender Stam believes De Ligt would be a great addition to the Merseyside to compliment Van Dijk.
“It’s important that he’ll get playing time,” Stam told DAZN, as quoted by Metro.
“I think that Matthijs de Ligt would be a good fit though. It will be great to see how he performs against better players in a better league, not just every few weeks, but every weekend.
“The same goes for Liverpool. We all know who is their biggest defensive star – his Dutch colleague (Van Dijk) – the other players, Lovren and Matip, rotate quite a lot.”
De ligt has played 17 Champions League games for Ajax and scored three goals.
