Three players in line for a Tottenham Transfer this summer

Spurs are currently facing the prospect of losing several key players amidst the uncertainty surrounding manager Mauricio Pochettino. Pochettino has left his future in the balance since losing the Champions League final to Liverpool.

Even so, the show must go on and the club must scout and try to sign new players who can be the foundation for a successful Spurs in the future. Tottenham’s transfers have usually been shrewd, cut-price deals for under-rated players. The trend in Spurs transfer targets seems to be changing in favour of young and upcoming players who are making a mark in their leagues.

Tottenham Transfers: Three players most likely to join Spurs
Spurs are looking at options to replace Eriksen

Here’s a list of such players that Tottenham might be interested in:

  • Giovani Lo Celso- Real Betis
  • Lorenzo Pellegrini- AS Roma
  • Donny Van de Beek- Ajax Amsterdam

Notice that all of these players are prospective replacements for Christian Eriksen, who has expressed his desire to leave the club. The strongest prospect in terms of how likely the transfers are to go through is Giovani Lo Celso.

Giovani Lo Celso (23)

Position: Central Midfield/Attacking Midfield
The Argentine has 9 goals and five assists in La Liga for the 2018-19 season and has also earned calls to the national team in recent months. At 23 years old, he is certainly some way off his peak but going by his growth trajectory, he could really be a handful for opponents in the Premier League.

Lorenzo Pellegrini (22)

Position: Central Midfield/Attacking Midfield
The Italy international is a year younger the Lo Celso but has shone bright for the capital club. He could make the switch from Italy’s capital to Engaland’s and take the next step in his career. A product of Roma’s academy, he was sold to Sassuolo in 2015, only to be bought back by AS Roma two season further in 2017.

The Roma midfielder has been deployed mostly in an attacking midfield role but has also played a significant number of games as a central midfielder. He also has stints as a defensive midfielder but that position doesn’t really utilize his ability to split a defence with his vision and passing. His Tottenham transfer seems unlikely despite multiple reports mainly because he has a contract until 2022.

Donny Van de Beek (22)

Position: Attacking Midfield
Van de Beek is the least likely of the players listed to be interested in a Spurs transfer. However he also fits the mold of attacking midfielder that Tottenham are looking for. The Ajax man has impressed in Ajax’s run to the semi-final of the Champions League and also with the Dutch national team.

Who is the most likely among them to replace Eriksen?

A glance through the list shows a pattern: young players who can play for years in a club. Tottenham certainly want someone who can be an integral part of the long-term plans. Spurs transfer dealings this summer are going to be all about building for the future. The most likely among these is certainly Lo Celso, for whom the club have already had a bid rejected worth up to £53 million.
