Tottenham Hotspur backed to sign Gareth Bale from Real Madrid

Former Tottenham star Paul Robinson believes Jose Mourinho should try and bring Gareth Bale to Spurs if he can be swapped for Christian Eriksen as no one, including Mourinho, knows whether the Danish international will stay at the club beyond the January transfer window.

Eriksen’s contract ends by the end of this season and he will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with other clubs ahead of the summer.

He has been a fringe player under the new Portuguese manager at the White Hart Lane, which has kept everyone speculating his imminent exit from the club.

Eriksen made it very clear during the last summer itself that he wanted a Real Madrid move, however, Tottenham didn’t let him go as they hoped he will sign a new contract with the club.

With Eriksen being able to talk to the clubs himself after January, it looks highly unlikely that Spurs will be able to stop him if he agrees to personal terms with Real Madrid, leaving Tottenham with no choice but to sell him in a cut-price deal.

Robinson though believes Tottenham should utilise Real’s interest in Eriksen by going after Bale, a player who Mourinho has long been interested in.

I think they should try to get him if they can,” he told Football Insider.

“I think if Eriksen is going to go to Real Madrid, I think that would be the perfect deal for Tottenham and Tottenham supporters.

“He’ll be the perfect fit for Mourinho, he’d give the whole place a lift, rather than have Eriksen who clearly doesn’t want to be there.

“He’s sulking and he’s not happy, it looks like he is going to want to leave.

“To get someone of Bale’s quality in, as part of a deal, if that’s possible then it’ll be great.”

Bale has struggled to win over the Spanish fans ever since moving to Real back in 2013, despite playing a huge role in the club winning four Champions League titles.

He drew further ire from Real fans earlier in the season when he was pictured holding up a Welsh flag with the words “Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order.” emblazoned across it.

Should we swap Christian Eriksen with Gareth Bale? Do we have any other options? What do you think?
