Well, it was never going to be easy for Gedson Fernandes in his maiden start against Southampton, but to his credit, he did try to work hard for Tottenham Hotspur. Fans, however, don’t seem to be too impressed.

It’s rare for Jose Mourinho to give starts to the new signings this early in their career, but he did surprise many of us when we saw Fernandes’ name in the starting lineup for Spurs in their FA Cup fourth-round tie against Premier League rivals Southampton away from home at St. Mary’s Stadium.

The 21-year-old midfielder, who joined Spurs from Benefica on loan just few days back, couldn’t stay on the pitch for 90 minutes though and was substituted at 56 minutes.

According to WhoScored, Fernandes played one key pass, had a pass accuracy of 70%, took 19 touches, and made one tackle and one clearance.

Tottenham fans were not impressed with the display produced by Fernandes against Southampton and have criticised him on Twitter.

Below are some of the best comments:

Gedson Fernandes will have to quickly understand that Jose Mourinho is not known to give many chances and will have to try hard to capitalize on whatever is thrown at him.
