Arsenal wanted Joachim Andersen and team-mate Dennis Praet from Sampdoria
The Italian side were reported to have received Arsenal’s expression of interest in signing two of their players. One was attacking midfielder Dennis Praet while the other was central defender Joachim Andersen. In recent days Arsenal’s pursuit of the defender seems to have taken a hit on account of Spurs.
Arsenal’s transfer constraints will only allow them to sign one of the two players they have targeted as the club missed out on Champions League football for one more season while Tottenham reached the finals and qualified for the next edition with a fourth placed league finish.
Andersen has a £31 million release clause with Sampdoria
Samdoria have set a £31 million release clause in the defender’s contract. It doesn’t expire until 2022, giving the Italians leverage in any negotiations to stand firm on their demand. Arsenal can’t meet those requirements as they also need signings in other positions.
Tottenham are currently enjoying a renewed era of riches thanks to the completion of the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium. All the revenue from the final appearance is also promised to be reinvested, giving Spurs the chance to gazump Arsenal. Something every Tottenham fan will love to do, as will Mauricio Pochettino.
Tottenham are very interested in an affordable, quality centre-back with the future of Toby Alderweireld still just as unclear as it was six months ago.
