Liverpool’s Virgil Van-Dijk has been the best defender in the Premier League this season. So good in fact, that he has been awarded the PFA Fan’s Player of the Year.
The towering centre-back wasn’t always this big and powerful. In 2012 he had a medical situation that threatened his very life.
On April 1, way back in 2012 his appendix ruptured and his kidneys got infected. He reached this situation by means of a mis-diagnosis. However, it was scary and he hoped to save his life somehow. In an interview, the Dutchman reveals his situation to FourFourTwo.
“I’m not going to lie, I was pretty scared. I could have died.”
After that, he goes on into the details of what it means to battle for the Premier League title.
“I understand our supporters would rather be seven points clear at the top of the table, but this is the situation we’re in, you know? We need everyone together, and we’re going to give everything.”

If you were to be told that a boy from a Northern Dutch club will go on to become the PFA player of the Year for Liverpool, keeping the best defensive record in the league in 2012, you’d laugh at us. But today, because Van-Dijk survived that scare we have the best defender in the world.
